What is the best Girth / horse Cinch for you? The term cinch and girth can be used interchangably. Generally speaking the horse cinch is on a western saddle and the girth is on an english saddle. A good western saddle may have a front cinch, rear cinch, and a breast collar. The rear cinch and breast collar are not necessary unless you are in hilly terrain, then it is a must have. I learned that the hard way.
Cinch Size
The cinch has two D-rings, one on either end. A good cinch will have rollers incorporated in the D-rings. The center of the cinch will have two small D-rings that allows the breast collar and the rear cinch to be connected to it. To determine what size cinch you need, measure from just below the widest part of your horses ribcage in the girth area, to the center of your horses chest and then double it.
Cinch Type/Material
There are three types of cinches most riders use; fleece, mohair, and neoprene, all of which have pros, and cons.
The fleece cinch is the softest against the horse’s skin so it is suited for sensitive horses. I would not recommend this type of cinch for trail riding because if it’s not well cared for it will most likely clump and mat, which will make it uncomfortable. The fleece material also has a tendency to slip if not tightened enough.
Mohair- Horse Cinch
The Mohair is the most traditional type of cinch and the one I like the most. The Mohair breathes so it will dry quicker when crossing a river or washing it. The Mohair cinches also distribute weight across a wider area on your horses chest. The one down side is it is hard to keep it looking good.
Neoprene- Horse Cinch
The Neoprene cinches have a better grip then other choices and is easy to clean. The extra grip means your saddle will stay secure during your off trail excursions. The neoprene cinches do tend to get hot, so look for one that has venting.
